How to Write About Yourself
Writing about yourself can seem embarrassing at first, but only share as much as you are comfortable with others knowing. Here are a few helpful hints we’ve compiled to help you craft your best #QYTO Introduction.
Introduce Yourself: Whatever kind of writing you are planning on doing, whatever your purpose, think about it like you are introducing yourself to a stranger. What do they need to know? Answer one or two questions like:
- Who are you?
- What is your background?
- What are your interests?
- What are your talents?
- What are your achievements?
- What challenges have you faced?
Start with a Shortlist: If you are not sure where to start, or if you feel limited, make a list. Brainstorm ideas that will help you decide, sketching out as many different answers as you feel necessary.
Narrow it Down: Pick one specific topic, describe it in detail, and use that to introduce yourself. It is better to pick one thing and use a lot of detail than to give someone a big long list of general items.
Short Introdutcion: I’m StrangDichotomy, a Queer white cis male (He/Him) living in the Pacific Northwest, with my husband and two dogs. I’m a vegan, sex- and body-positive librarian, that’s also a Magical Unicorn.
Long Introduction: My name is Brian (StrangeDichotomy); I’m a Queer white cis male (He/Him). I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest city of Bellingham, WA, with my husband, Kyle (TheHubinator), and our two dogs, Sherman and Katie (ShermanandKate). I’m a National and International Award-Winning Librarian and Fellow, as well as a vegan, sex- and body-positive man that is covered in tattoos and loves the color pink. Oh, and I’m a Magical Fucking Unicorn!
